It is the year 2015. In the Pony Express Postal Station in St. Joseph, Missouri, Michael, a harried postal supervisor, is struggling to maintain order as society around him turns to chaos. Nearby, in Mound City, Bonnie watches her husband prepare for the end of the world. Michael is forced to take his teenaged daughter and leave his job and the city. He sets off for Minnesota hoping to find safe haven with his survivalist brother-in-law. He meets Bonnie, who has just become a widow, on the way. Bonnie begins to cling to Michael for support. With a jealous daughter Michael tries to keep things in control. The traveling party grows to eight as they fight off thieves, bandits, sickness and fear. They reach Minnesota and begin a new life but their struggles are far from over as the world reels with ecological, political and emotional disasters. Humor, sadness and terror is woven together along with eight people struggling to survive in a new, frightening world.

Thomas Vance, almost 40, takes a newspaper job in Beautiful, Nevada. Jennifer Voshell, barely 30, and breathtaking also moves to Beautiful. She and her husband are expecting a child and her husband is Thomas’s new boss. Jennifer is unsure of her husband, sensing his involvement in something strange.
